I couldnât believe it was so easy. After breakfast, we found Carl and his crew heading toward the golf course in their cart. Nova, wearing tiny short shorts, had no trouble waving them down, and they came to a jerky stop a nanosecond later. Pretty good reaction time for guys in their seventies, I thought to myself.
âHey, I heard you used to be a cop,â I shouted to Carl as we approached them.
âThatâs right.â Carl nodded, a sly grin on his face. âWhy? You ladies in some kinda trouble?â
âNo, but weâre looking into the Bob Murphy case,â I said. âFor Susan. She asked us to when she found out we solved a murder case in Asheville, North Carolina.â
Okay, I exaggerated a bit about Susan asking usâ¦
âYou solved a murder case.â His eyes flicked between the two of us. It wasnât a question, but he did seem pretty incredulous.
âYeah, thatâs right. One of our castmates was murdered,â Nova shot back, obviously feeling a bit defensive toward Carlâs skepticism.
Carl laughed. âFine, what can I do to help you?â His dismissive attitude left a lot to be desired.
âYou always say he was murdered. You were a copâdonât you feel some compulsion to prove he was killed and to find his killer?â I narrowed my eyes on him, feeling certain we were about to experience a gratuitous case of man-splaining. âWhat kind of cop wouldnât want to get justice for a victim?â
âWell, he was a victim, but he shouldnât have been sleeping with someone elseâs wife. And the fact she was a Palmer who was running for council and married to someone else on the council⦠Well, that only makes it worse.â Carl squinted back at me, but I was pretty sure that was because the rising sun was in his eyes.
âAre you saying he got what he deserved?â Nova butted in.
I interrupted before Carl got a chance to man-splain, âSusan said he and Millie only had a drunken flingâa one-time thing. And that it was blown out of proportion. She thinks Art Vandeson killed Bob, not because of the affair but because of the rift between the Golfers and Palmers.â
Carl scratched at his chin. âWell, Art Vandeson was in Miami that weekend at a poker tournament, or so he says.â
âHe was,â I confirmed. âWe looked it up. He came in fourth, won a bunch of money. But he could have used it to finance a hitman.â
Carl nodded. âTrue. There are a bunch of shady Palmers. Coulda been any one of âem.â
âAnd what about Millie? Whatever became of her?â After all, that box was still unchecked.
âMillie passed away a few years ago, sadly,â Hawaiian Shirt, I mean Gary, piped up from the cart. And, oh yes, he was wearing a humdinger of a print today. This one featured martini glasses and vibrant flowers.
âOh, I thought someone said she was still alive?â Nova questioned, her eyes snapping to mine as if to confirm that was what we heard. I seemed to remember someone saying that too.
